What Our Clients Say About Us

How Tractor Finance Works

Most tractor finance is written as a chattel mortgage. You own the tractor from day one, the lender holds security over it, and you claim the GST on the purchase price upfront on your next BAS if you are registered. Terms run 1 to 7 years, and a balloon can be set at the end to bring repayments down during the loan. Leases and hire purchase are available too, but for the majority of tractor buyers the chattel mortgage is the structure that fits, and it is what we quote first unless your accountant has a reason to go another way.

The size of the tractor changes the shape of the deal. A compact or utility tractor between $15,000 and $60,000 is a quick approval for an established ABN, often same day, with minimal paperwork. A broadacre machine at $200,000 to $500,000 or more is a proper credit assessment, and the structure matters more: balloon size, term length and how the repayment sits against your income through the year. If your income is seasonal, there are structuring options built for that, which we cover in detail on our agricultural machinery finance page.

What You Can Finance with Tractor Finance

Tractors hold their value better than almost any other machine we finance, and lenders know it. Where most equipment gets hard to fund past 10 years old, a well kept tractor at 15 to 20 years is still very financeable with the right funder, and older again is possible when the deal stacks up. Hours matter more than the year on the plate. A 12 year old tractor with 3,500 hours is a stronger proposition than an 8 year old machine with 10,000, and lenders who understand the asset assess it that way.

Brand plays into it too. John Deere, Case IH, New Holland, Kubota, Massey Ferguson and Fendt all have deep resale markets in Australia, which means stronger balloon options and better appetite on used machines. A lesser known import can still be financed, but the lender pool narrows and the structure is usually more conservative.

We finance tractors from dealers, private sellers, clearing sales, auctions and field days, anywhere from $10,000 to $500,000 plus. If you are buying the tractor with a front end loader, slasher, forks, post hole digger or other implements as part of the same purchase, the attachments can be rolled into the one loan rather than paid from cash. Two wheel drive, four wheel drive, articulated, narrow vineyard and orchard models, all covered.

Who Tractor Finance Is For

Farmers are the obvious buyers, but tractors turn up in far more businesses than farming. We arrange tractor finance for landscaping and earthworks contractors, horticulture and vineyard operations, turf and sports ground maintenance, equine properties, land management contractors and civil businesses running a tractor alongside their other plant. If you also run a skid steer or are weighing one up for the same work, our skid steer finance page covers how those files differ.

One question we get every week: can I finance a tractor for my lifestyle block? Commercial tractor finance needs the machine to be predominantly for business use under an ABN. If you are running an ag business, a contracting operation or earning genuine income off the property, you are in commercial territory even if the block is small. If the tractor is purely for personal acreage use, that is a consumer finance conversation, and it is still one we can have, it just goes through a different set of lenders and paperwork.

New ABNs and owner operators buying a first tractor are common files for us. Low doc options exist where full financials are not available yet, and credit history that is less than perfect narrows the lender pool without closing it.

Why Use a Broker for Tractor Finance

Tractor lending appetite is all over the place from one funder to the next, and that is the whole case for using a broker on this asset. One lender caps tractor age at 10 years and will not touch a private sale. Another goes to 20 years, funds clearing sale purchases and prices them competitively. Walk into your bank and you get one policy. Come to us and you get the policy that suits the tractor you have actually found.

Private sales are where this shows up most. A big share of good used tractors sell privately or at clearing sales, and plenty of lenders make that hard with inspection requirements, ownership checks and encumbrance searches. We handle that process routinely: PPSR check on the machine, payout of any existing finance the seller has on it, and settlement direct to the seller so you are not handing over cash against a promise.

The other piece is structure. Because tractors hold value, balloons can be set more aggressively than on most equipment, which drops your repayment without hurting your position at trade in time. Getting that balance right for your specific machine and term is broker work, not a rate table. As part of our broader machinery finance offering, tractors are gear we place every month, and we know which funders want them.

Getting Tractor Finance

Step 1: Tell us about the tractor and your business. A phone call or the form below is enough to start. Make, model, year, hours, price and where you are buying it from, plus your ABN details. Compact tractor files for established ABNs can be quoted the same day.

Step 2: We match the lender and get you approved. We place the file with the funder whose policy actually fits your tractor's age, hours and seller type. Straightforward files are approved in 24 to 72 hours. If you are heading to an auction or clearing sale, we can have approval in place before you bid so you can buy on the day with confidence.

Step 3: Settlement and delivery. Dealer purchases settle fast once documents are signed. Private and clearing sale purchases add a day or two for the inspection, PPSR check and any payout to the seller's financier, then funds go direct to the seller and the tractor is yours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I finance a used tractor?
Yes, and used tractors make up a big share of what we finance. Tractors hold their value well, so lenders are comfortable with second hand machines from dealers, private sellers and clearing sales. Rates on used tractors are competitive, especially on machines under 10 years old with sensible hours.
How old can a tractor be for finance?
With the right lender, tractors up to 15 to 20 years old are straightforward. Older than that is still possible when the machine is in good condition and the overall file stacks up, but the lender pool narrows. Some funders also apply an age limit at the end of the loan term, so a longer term on an older tractor may need the right funder match.
Do lenders look at hours or age on a tractor?
Both, but hours tell the real story. A 12 year old tractor with 3,500 hours has plenty of working life left and lenders who know the asset see it that way. High hours on a newer machine can be the harder conversation. We put the hours in front of the funder who reads them properly.
Can I finance a tractor from a private sale or clearing sale?
Yes. Private and clearing sale purchases are routine for us. We run a PPSR check to confirm there is no money owing on the machine, arrange any inspection the lender needs, pay out the seller's existing finance if there is any, and settle funds direct to the seller. It usually adds a day or two compared with a dealer purchase.
Do I need a deposit for tractor finance?
Established ABNs can usually finance the full purchase price with no deposit. Newer ABNs, older tractors or credit issues may need a deposit or trade in to get the file across the line. If a deposit strengthens your rate, we will tell you the difference in dollars so you can decide.
Can I get tractor finance with a new ABN?
Yes. New ABN owner operators buy tractors all the time and there are lenders built for exactly that. Expect a low doc assessment, possibly a deposit, and a slightly higher rate than an established business would get. Once you have trading history behind you, refinancing to a sharper rate is an option.
Can I finance a tractor for a hobby farm or lifestyle block?
It depends on use. Commercial finance needs the tractor to be predominantly for business use under an ABN. If the property earns genuine income, agistment, cropping, contracting, you are likely fine. If the tractor is purely personal use on your own acreage, it becomes a consumer finance conversation, which we can still arrange through a different set of lenders.
Can I include a front end loader and attachments in the loan?
Yes, when they are bought as part of the same purchase. A front end loader, slasher, forks, post hole digger or other implements can be rolled into the one tractor loan with one repayment, rather than draining cash reserves to pay for the extras separately.
How much can I borrow with tractor finance?
From around $10,000 for a compact tractor up to $500,000 plus for broadacre machines. The loan is secured by the tractor itself, so borrowing power comes down to the machine's value and your business position rather than a fixed cap.
How are tractor finance repayments calculated?
Repayments come down to the amount financed, the term, the rate your profile qualifies for, and the balloon. Because tractors hold value, balloons can be set higher than on most equipment, which pulls the monthly repayment down. We quote real numbers on your actual machine rather than a generic calculator estimate.
Can repayments match seasonal farm income?
Yes. Some lenders offer structured repayments that sit lower through the year and step up around harvest, or annual and semi annual payment options for primary producers. If your income is seasonal, tell us upfront and we will place the file with a funder who structures for it.
Should I use a chattel mortgage or a lease for a tractor?
Most tractor buyers use a chattel mortgage. You own the machine, claim the GST upfront if registered, and depreciate the asset. A lease suits some businesses for balance sheet or cash accounting reasons. We will lay out both against your situation, and your accountant makes the final call on tax treatment.
How fast can tractor finance be approved?
Compact tractor files for established ABNs can be approved same day. Most straightforward files are approved in 24 to 72 hours. Larger broadacre machines and low doc files take longer because the assessment is deeper, but we keep it moving and tell you exactly what the lender is waiting on.
Can I get approved before I find the tractor?
Yes, and if you are buying at auction or a clearing sale you should. We can arrange approval based on an estimated purchase amount so you can bid knowing your finance is in place, then settle once you have the machine's details. Approvals typically stay valid for around 60 to 90 days depending on the lender.
Can I get tractor finance with bad credit?
Often, yes. Defaults, a past company issue or a thin credit file narrow the lender pool but rarely close it, especially when the tractor is a strong asset. Expect a higher rate and possibly a deposit. Be upfront about the history so we place the file with the right funder the first time.
